Ν002 Kurandza A Learning Center in Mozambique [ Architectural Competition Entry 2022 ]
Having as a primary element in the design process the existence of the canhueiro tree at the plot and the relationships that a tree has always created in Africa, around it and under it, -since trees due to their thick shade were the first meeting points between people-, the project deals with the idea of housing and activities that develop under one roof, like under a tree.
The project is structured in 3 stages. Firstly, the plot is being elevated in order to protect the Learning Center from floods in rainy days. Secondly, the programmatic uses are divided in 4 different buildings that framing a degraded atrium and arranged in such a way to allow better air flow circulation. That four buildings are joined together in a way that creates an elevated courtyard that can be used for play and activities. In addition, an external skin to those four buildings and the elevated courtyard is added in order to achieve the protection from the severe weather conditions and also to bring all the activities under one roof like just under a tree.
The project ambition is to make the Kurandza Learning Center a safe space where girls can study and become the next generation of female leaders.
